March 4th, 2010Top 11 Movies I shouldn’t like, but do
Hello one and all, and welcome to another Top 11 List. This list is part of a [possible] trilogy of list about Movies, because the blog is not just about Video Games.
I’m going to start with the worst list of the 3, the Top 11 Movies I shouldn’t like, but do; you know, the movies that everyone hates but you like.
Since this is a personal list, it wasn’t very hard to write, because I didn’t really care about what people in internets land thought about them, it was just what I thought about them. Looking through my DVD collection though, I noticed that I had a few that people in internets land didn’t like, making the whole thing easier.
So without further ado, here is my Top 11 list of Movies I shouldn’t like, but do.
11) Harry Potter Films
Harry Potter has a cult-like following, children and adults alike but I can safely say that I’m not that bad. This is on the list because of the mockery I get from my friends for liking Harry Potter and no other reason, you either like it or you don’t and I happen to like it.
10) Thunderbirds (2004 Film)
I love Thunderbirds, who doesn’t and I was excited when I heard about a live action film and yes, I was disappointed. After I took off the nostalgia goggles (and found out why it was a ford and not a roller from Top Gear) I took it for what it could be, a reboot of the franchise, I’m not kidding, bringing it into the 21st century. Watch it again without your nostalgia goggles on, the foundations are there, all the original thunderbird machines are there, no name changes, the direction is good and it has a good level of action for a kid’s film. Give this another go, look past the original TV series and films with the puppets (sorry Supermarionation) and think of it as a reboot.
9) Dragon Ball Evolution
Confessions time – I have only seen the 1st episode of Dragon Ball and only a few of Dragon Ball Z when toonami was around in the UK, but what I saw, I liked and I am trying to get as many as I can to watch.
Now, to why I like this film, why do I like Hollywood’s take on a classic anime? The reason is, they tried and, although they were off, they did get the foundation of Dragon Ball Z, I guess they only watched the same amount of the series that I did and thought: Dragon Ball’s – Must Collect, Kamehameha – Signature Move, Character’s – Keep Names, Fighting – Must have that…
And that was about it. But still a good action film with some comedy moments, and they tried.
8 ) Garfield the Movie
When something has ‘The Movie’ in its title, you assume is going to be bad, so you’re not disappointed when it is. Garfield the Movie is one of them, it is a pretty bad film and I do admit, although I do own it, I haven’t watched it in a while and I haven’t seen the 2nd one at all. The reason I like this is a bad one, it’s when odie runs away – honestly, it brings a tear to my eye when it happens and of course, Bill Murray, even if he disowned the Garfield movies, it’s still Bill Murray.
7) Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows
The original Blair Witch Project was a really good film, a really good story with really good acting, hell it was even believable, so when a sequel was announced, there was high expectations. But those expectations were dashed, big time.
Until you look past the original film, this is a continuation of the Blair Witch Project, people going to the town where it was all filmed was real, although what happened in the film wasn’t.
The story may be a bit daft but it’s still a good watch, it’s scary and you can get into the story too.
6) Freddy Got Fingered
There isn’t much I can say about Freddy got Fingered, it’s a stupid film, a really stupid film but when your sat around, with your friends, getting drunk and rather stoned, it’s good to have on in the background to have a giggle at, and that’s why I like this film.
5) Doom
From here there’s a bit of a theme and you don’t need more than one brain cell to guess what it is lol.
Now then, Doom was a extremely good game and a bloody classic, there is no denying that and the prospect of a doom film excited everyone, but it was slammed, saying it had nothing to do with the game and to be honest, it didn’t but only slightly. In the game, not like I have to tell you, the demons came from Hell, in the movie, it was a genetic experiment and there not demons. Other than that, it stuck close to the game, and even had a FPS section. It’s a good action film, really.
4) Super Mario Bros
I understand why people don’t like this movie, it took a dump on their childhood and it took one on mine too, but if you look past the Super Mario parts of the film, it is really good, just change the names of Mario, Luigi, Koopa, Gombas(sp? lol), Yoshi and to an extent, Daisy and you have a half decent sci-fi movie.
3) Street Fighter/Mortal Kombat
These are the same as Super Mario Bros, it took a dump on two of the best fighting games in the world. But why do I like these film? Like with Super Mario Bros, if you took out the game references, you would have 2 standard martial arts films, which could have stood a chance of actually being good, not having to live up to the expectations of gamers.
Mortal Kombat has some extra problems with it, mainly the fight choreography; perhaps without trying to live up to Mortal Kombat’s moves in game, these could have been better.
2) Pokémon the Movie
Are you done laughing yet? Yes, I like Pokémon the Movie, even today.
I don’t know why I like it, but I can sit and watch it all the way through and understand what is going on. Not really much to write either, just that I like Pokémon and you can continue your laughter again.
1) Postal The Movie
Its only fitting that a Uwe Boll is at the top of this list, he makes some of the worst movies ever made and exploits loopholes that makes him money even if the film flops like a wet chocolate teapot.
Now, onto why I like this film so much – Uwe Boll took a good sandbox game with basically no story short of doing chores for your wife, and gave it a good, all be it dodgy story taking the things that make the game so good. Postal the Movie is Postal 2 with a proper story. All the mindless violence is in the game, the stupid cops are in the game and the Taliban is in the game, hell even the krotchy doll is in the game and in the game everyone wants it. What sets it off though is the appearance of Vince Desiderio, the guy who is responsible for Postal 2.
Even if you don’t like Uwe Boll (who does, really), give this movie a watch, it’s a good laugh.
Honourable Mentions
The Matrix Reloaded/The Matrix Revolutions
I thought about these when writing the list, but then I thought against it. They continue the story from The Matrix, some might not say there as good as the original, but they are still classics in a classic trilogy.
Star Wars Episode 1, 2 and 3
Well, not so much Episode 1, I was like Tim (Simon Pegg) from Spaced when I first saw this, in fact, I skipped watching 2 and 3 when they came out till much later when I was looking after my little brother and he wanted to watch them. But, Episode 2 and 3 are good films in their own right. I would still prefer to watch the unaltered original trilogy though any day.
